ON DECK: Josh Gibson Champions Club and Sports Matter Center
The DICK’S Sporting Goods Foundation and the Josh Gibson Foundation are teaming up to create the future Josh Gibson Champions Club and Sports Matter Center. The project will honor the legacy of Negro Leagues legend Josh Gibson while empowering youth in Pittsburgh.
Built on the site of the former Sto-Ken-Rox Boys and Girls Club, the facility will integrate sports, education, and mentorship, creating a place where McKees Rocks will grow for generations to come.
Designed with state-of-the-art baseball facilities, including a special field designed for athletes with disabilities, the complex will house educational spaces for programs like the Business of Sports Academy (BOSA), which introduces high school students to careers in sports management, marketing, and law. Additionally, STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) initiatives will be offered in partnership with local institutions, fostering academic growth alongside athletic development.
To help make it happen, the DICK’S Foundation is offering up to $2 million in matching funds. That means every donation, from a business, foundation, or individual, will be matched dollar for dollar. A $50,000 gift becomes $100,000. A $10,000 donation becomes $20,000. Every contribution counts and gets us one step closer to breaking ground.
