Because participation in extracurricular sports activities helps to develop the following; independence, leadership skills, confidence, sense of achievement, positive self-image, ability to make decisions and accept responsibility for actions, the Josh Gibson Foundation through partnerships with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Massaro Corporation, the Allegheny County Housing Authority, and Major League Baseball offers league programs for young people beginning ages 5 through 12. With approximately 250 participants annually, the leagues are linked with the Foundation's educational programming. Education takes priority over extra-curricular activities and all participates are required to maintain a 2.5 GPA. The League sponsors and encourages participation in both tutoring and counseling services free of charge. As public resource, the Josh Gibson Foundation encourages community involvement, especially from parents or guardians. Outstanding student athletes with grade point averages above 3.0 are recognized annually by election to the leagues' Academic All-Star Team.
